Project Profile
This project was successfully funded thanks to many individual contributions - Thank you!
Our project supports the "Our Dreams Matter Too" report from the Shannen's Dream campaign to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. We will be sending First Nations youth to present the report to the UN in Geneva in February 2012 requesting inquiry into First Nations education.
Thank you!
Although Canada is considered a developed nation, many of our First Nations people suffer. Education is a right and it can open many doors to success. First Nations children and youth should have access to this right today so they can have brighter futures and more successful outcomes.
Thanks to your support, we can send a youth representative to Geneva in February 2012 to present Shannen's Dream and the "Our Dreams Matter Too" report to the UN and they will meet with one of the panel members in order to explain the situation here in Canada with regard to First Nations education. The goal of this project is a full inquiry into First Nations education where a special rapporteur from the UN will research and provide results of the findings and recommendations in a full report.
We hope this will encourage members of Parliament to pass Motion 571 for Shannen's Dream and equitable education for First Nations in Canada.
The report was written by First Nations youth to support the Shannen's Dream campaign which is a social change movement advocating for 'safe and comfy' schools on reserve and equity in education funding and services for all First Nations children in Canada. The federal government provides $2000-$3000 less for First Nations education. Approximately 48 First Nation schools need to be replaced and another 29 need significant repair. In addition, there is no funding for things like libraries, computers, principals, special education or extracurricular activities. First Nations should have proper education like other Canadian kids! Please see www.shannensdream.ca for further information.
First Nations kids want a chance to succeed like all of the others kids in Canada. Often they do not because they live on a reserve. Thank you for being a part of this change and helping all of our children in Canada share in the joys of education!
We strive for generations of healthy First Nations kids and families by promoting social movements for change for culturally relevant equity in programs, services and funding. We believe that communities are in the best position to make decisions for their children and that we can all make a difference!
