The SES is working with First Nations and the general public about how the tar sands might be developed in a sustainable fashion.SES produced a 45-minute presentation on tar sands, and brought this information directly to the people

Canada’s most destructive environmental project, the tar sands, is now starting to take place in Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewan Environmental Society (SES) is working with First Nations and the general public to discuss how the tar sands might be developed in a sustainable fashion. In particular, northern communities, where the development is happening, may not get the full story about tar sands. SES has produced a 45-minute presentation on tar sands, which ends in a series of recommendations on how SK may avoid the mistakes that Alberta has made in their tar sands.

Thanks to Small Change Fund donors we brought this information directly to the people and provided an opportunity for northerners to attend a First Nations-led workshop (WaterKeepers) on water protection in August 2011.

In order to prevent environmental and health degradation, the SES will continue to work with northern communities in SK to help them preserve the water, air and land resources from hazardous non-renewable resource consumption. We will work together to develop tools and community opportunity to have a significant voice in tar sands development.

Small Change Fund donors allowed us to travel to La Loche, Buffalo Narrow, Ile-a-la-Crosse, and Turnor Lake for community presentations and discussions.  Thank you!
