“Our people's way of life is directly tied to the well-being of the Peel Watershed. The land management system arising from our Final Agreements with the Crown is meant to protect the cultural values of our people. It is time to respect the spirit of these Agreements.”

Project Profile
This project has been fully funded by Small Change Fund donors. Thank you for your support!
A recommended land use plan has been released in the Peel Watershed. With your help, we were able to meet with advisors, develop support, and bring First Nation people together to develop our strategy, which we hope will be key to our success in this long struggle to protect our land.
Our First Nation of Na-cho Nyak Dun is calling for protection of our wild and roadless traditional lands in the Yukon's Peel watershed.
For decades, our elders have been calling for protection of our Peel lands from industrialization, yet over 8000 mining claims have been staked there in the last five years and the Yukon Government refused to implement a moratorium on staking claims.
We live in the remote northern community of Mayo and we sought funding from Small Change Fund donors to aid us in obtaining protection for the vast Peel watershed. We primarily needed funds for travel to Yukon's capital city, Whitehorse, to liaise with key advisors to discuss protected area options; to organize visits for our leaders and elders to visit other protected areas which are co-managed by First Nations; and to raise funds and develop plans for a First Nation leadership tour into our Peel lands to raise the profile of our struggle to protect our lands.
Thank you Small Change Fund donors!
The mission of our Na-cho Nyak Dun First Nation is to provide a sustainable future for our citizens which honors our traditional and cultural roots.
