The Carrier Sekani Fight to Stop the Enbridge Gateway Pipeline: Elders and Youth Walk the Pipeline Route
Fort Fraser and Fort St. James, BC
RAISED: $7252

With your support, Carrier and Sekani Elders and Youth walked portions of a proposed Enbridge Gateway pipeline route to learn about environmental impacts and voice concerns. Thanks to your help we are now able to produce a DVD to capture the journey and use as a public outreach and media tool in the overall fight to stop the tar sands oil pipeline.

Thanks to Small Change Fund donors - we exceeded our target and the fight continues!

Our three nations, Nadleh Whut'en, Nak'azdli, and Takla Lake First Nations, are currently faced with proposed dual pipelines that would transport oil and condensate from the Alberta tar sands to the BC west coast to be shipped by tanker to ports in Asia. Our rivers are currently faced with multiple developments, and our salmon stocks are in severe decline. The prospect of an oil or condensate spill on our precious rivers is unacceptable. The pipeline would not provide long-term jobs or other benefits to our communities, and thus the project is all risk and no benefit for First Nations. Enbridge recently filed their application to the federal government.

Our nations have been working to stop this pipeline for 5 years and we are currently not accepting funds from either the federal government or the company because these funds are tied to support for the project. We have developed multiple strategies to stop this project including: legal action, environmental research, community action, and investor and media campaigns. Enbridge is one of the world's largest pipeline companies, but we have joined forces with 25 other First Nations to stop this project. By protecting our rivers and coastline we ensure our future generations culture and access to traditional foods.
